Psalms Classes 2025-2026

What Are The Psalms?

A collection of poetic prayers - used liturgically in ancient Israel (during the time of the Second Temple and, in some cases, during the time of the First Temple) - many of which are said to have been written by King David - and which are still very much in use today, including in our Kabbalat Shabbat services and for comfort and healing.

Have you read them all?  Let's take a journey together!

In 2025 - 2026, Shirat HaNefesh will host a series of classes, which will give us an opportunity to read and study The Psalms.  Classes will begin AFTER the High Holy Days.
Come join us.  All are welcome.

The Classes will include:

One Evening Introductory Session & Overview - Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 7 - 8:30 pm over Zoom, featuring Guest Speaker Tamar Kamionkowski (Biblical Scholar and Professor at the Reconstructionist Rabbinic College)

Fifteen Biweekly Daytime Classes - generally on Thursdays from 12 - 1 pm (with a few exceptions to avoid other conflicts), each led over Zoom by a Class Gabbai (including Rabbah Arlene Berger, Rabbi Gerry Serotta, Rabbi David Balto, Master Teacher Gideon Amir, George Franklin and Nan Wellins); from Thursday, October 23, 2025 through Thursday, May 7, 2026

Two Evening Talks at 7 - 8:30 pm over Zoom, featuring Guest Speaker Hazzan Ramon Tasat (and musical recordings of the Psalms being sung); the class on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 will focus on the Psalms included in Kabbalat Shabbat services; the class on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 will focus on the use of Psalms for comfort and healing
