Nevi'im (The Prophets): PART III EZEKIEL and the “MINOR PROPHETS”

What is this series about?

We read the Torah (the Five Books of Moses) year after year, and we are exposed to SOME portions of Nevi'im (The Prophets) through the Haftarot, but there are many sections of Nevi'im that we never read.  What else is written in Nevi'im?  Join us and find out!

Nevi'im (The Prophets) Classes Part III 2024-2025

What:  In Parts I & II, we read, studied and discussed the first six books of Nevi'im (The Historic Prophets - Joshua, Judges, I & II Samuel and I & II Kings), Isaiah and Jeremiah.  In Part III, we will explore EZEKIEL and the MINOR PROPHETS.  You are welcome to join, even if you did not participate in Parts I or II.

Guest Speaker Dr. Tamar Kamionkowski to Present an Overview of Ezekiel and The Minor Prophets

To enhance our study of Ezekiel and the Minor Prophets, we are delighted to AGAIN welcome Dr. Tamar Kamionkowski  (Biblical Scholar and Professor at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College) as a guest speaker to provide an overview.

Biweekly Classes

We will then meet EVERY OTHER WEEK (usually on Thursdays).  Each class will be over ZOOM, for ONE HOUR, from NOON - 1 p.m. Each session will feature a "Class Gabbai" who will provide a brief introduction and then be available during our class discussion.  We plan to meet as follows:

  • Classes #1 & #2: Thursday, Nov 7 and 21, noon - 1 pm - Ezekiel (Class Gabbai - Rabbi Gerry Serotta)
  • Classes #3 & #4: Thursday, Dec 5 and 19, noon - 1 pm - Ezekiel (Class Gabbai - Nan Wellins)

  • Class #5: Thursday, Jan 16, noon - 1 pm - Hosea (Class Gabbai - Rabbah Arlene Berger)

Reading:  We encourage participants to read the text before each class.  An English translation is available in any Tanakh or at https://www.sefaria.org/texts. (For those interested, further analysis is available in The Jewish Study Bible, at https://www.sefaria.org/texts, in The Prophets by Abraham J. Heschel, in Thinking about the Prophets by Kenneth Seeskin and in many other sources.)  

Is There a Fee for these Classes?  There is no fee for members of Shirat HaNefesh.  Non-members are welcome to participate.  We invite non-members to make a donation to our community.  (Suggested donation: $54 for Part III of this series, if you are able.)

Nevi'im (The Prophets) Classes Part II: Ezekiel and the "Minor Prophets"

We are happy to report that we've set 2023-2024 dates for Part II of our Nevi'im Series.
 
Part II will cover Isaiah and Jeremiah.  We will dedicate six classes to Isaiah and five to Jeremiah.  
 
A "class gabbai" will lead each discussion, and each class will be conducted over Zoom, at noon, for an hour, on either a Tuesday or a Thursday (depending largely on the availability of Class Gabbaim and holidays).  We will start in November:

Nevi'im (The Prophets) Part I: A New Series of Classes

We have begun a NEW series of classes about Nevi'im ... The Prophets on Zoom.

Part I focuses on the “Historical Books” (Joshua, Judges, I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings). We expect to explore the Other Books (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the "Minor Prophets") later this year.  
 
Each session will feature a "Class Gabbai" who will provide a brief introduction and then be available during our class discussion. We encourage participants to read the text before each class.

We are meeting on Zoom as follows:
• Thursday, 3/2, 12-1 p.m. – Joshua, Chapters 13-24 (Class Gabbai - George Franklin)
• Thursday, 3/16 & 3/30, 12-1 p.m. - Judges (Class Gabbai - Rabbi Rachel Gartner)

Guest Speaker Tamar Kamionkowski to Present an Overview of Nevi'im (The Prophets)

To enhance our study of Nevi'im (The Prophets) at Shirat HaNefesh, we are delighted to welcome Tamar Kamionkowski as a Guest Speaker.  She will join us on Zoom on Wednesday, March 15 from 7 - 8:30 p.m.  
 
Tamar Kamionkowski has been a Professor of Biblical Studies at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College since 1997. Her lifelong passion is bridging the worlds of biblical scholarship and contemporary Jewish life. Kamionkowski is a two-time winner of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College’s Yaakov Gladstone Award for Fine Teaching.
 
All are welcome.  You do not need to be participating in our noon-time Prophets Class to attend this special event.
