On April 9th we are getting together for a very special themed Shabbat service called "Teal Shabbat" with Saralilian (Lily) Twibell, JCADA's Manager of Outreach and Partnership. Teal Shabbat raises awareness about sexual assault and intimate partner violence by inviting synagogues and Hillels to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). As an agency that supports victims of intimate partner violence (IPV), JCADA (Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse) knows that sexual assault is often one of the tactics abusers use to control their partners. Therefore, JCADA created Teal Shabbat to shine a light on the darkness of intimate partner violence and to show victims that they are not alone. We will talk about Parshat Metzora in accordance with our Teal Shabbat program. This Parsha focuses on the purification processes for both people and homes that become infected with tz’arat, and draws upon several factors that in many ways echo experiences of survivors of sexual assault or trauma. The themes in this parsha around isolation, sacrifice, rituals for purification, and reporting can all tie into victimization and experiences of survivors in communities.
