Tu B'Shevat Seder

Sunday, January 23, 2022 21 Shevat 5782

1:00 PM - 3:00 PMNorth Chevy Chase Christian Church

Join us for a virtual Tu B'Shevat Seder!

Tu B'Shevat, the New Year for the Trees, is the traditional time to plant trees in Israel and is an opportunity to champion responsible stewardship of the Earth. The Tu B'Shevat Seder is a kabbalistic tradition that has gained popularity in contemporary times as an expression of environmental concerns.

This Tu B’Shevat, we find ourselves in the "Yovel" year. This time directs our attention to cycles of work and rest, holding and releasing as they relate to the land, to our lives, and to our communities. At our seder, we'll explore these concepts through ritual, conversation, meditation and chant, plus the enjoyment of some wine and fruit, too!

Rabbi Rachel Gartner will be leading our Tu B'Shevat Seder. Please plan to gather the items used in the Seder, so you can follow along at home. Here is what you will need:

• White and red wine or grape juice (enough for 4 cups per person).

• Fruit that is hard on the outside and soft on the inside, such as walnuts, coconuts, or almonds.

• Fruit that is soft with a pit in the center, such as olives, dates, peaches, or apricots.

• Fruit that is soft throughout and is completely edible, such as figs, grapes, or raisins.

• Fruit that has a tough skin on the outside but is sweet within such as mangos, bananas, or avocados.

It is traditional to eat a vegetarian meal as part of the Seder.
