Join us for Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song, on MLK Weekend, as we chant the Song at the Sea. Redemption, liberation, and song are forever linked in our history.  Join us as our own member Dr. Norma Brooks takes the Rabbi’s Table and leads us in a workshop on composing new liturgical music. Studying the text comes before there is any melody; the melody grows from the text.  Norma will walk us through her creative process and share with us comp ositions from her latest collaborative effort, Psalm Full of Soul.  Services with Rabbi Gilah and Norma start PROMPTLY at 9:30;  Rabbi’s Table at 10:45;  and kiddush at noon.

Dr. Norma Brooks is a critically acclaimed composer of Jewish sacred music. Her melodies are sung in congregations across the United States. With Hazzan Ramón she co-founded Shalshelet, an international organization supporting the creation of new liturgical music. Her CDs include Your Bountiful Life and her latest work, Psalm Full of Soul, a groundbreaking collection of original melodies for texts from the Psalms, in collaboration with Gospel singers Vanessa Williams and Vince Evans, and with guest artists The Blind Boys of Alabama, Greg Boyer and Cantor Natasha Hirschhorn.
